What Does the Inspection Due Message Mean on an Audi?
The Inspection due message means your Audi has reached its scheduled maintenance interval and wants its routine service, not that something is broken. I'm Shawn Baker, founder and ASE Certified Master Technician at Luxury Motors of South Bay in Hermosa Beach, and this is one of the most common questions Audi owners ask when they call about routine maintenance.
The message looks more urgent than it is. It's a reminder, and it's tracking time as well as miles. Here's what it means, what gets done, and when.
What does the Inspection due message mean on an Audi?
It means your Audi's service interval display has counted down to zero for the inspection service. Audi Malaysia's service and maintenance page shows the three messages the cluster can display when service is required: "Inspection due!", "Oil change due!" and "Oil change and inspection due!" Book the service soon, but don't treat it like a warning light.
Before the due date arrives, the same system gives you a heads-up. The reminder appears in the instrument cluster when you switch the ignition on or off, showing how much time or distance is left.
How is an inspection different from an oil change reminder?
Audi tracks the inspection and the oil change as two separate counters. That's why your car can show one, the other, or both at the same time. Read the exact wording on your dash, because it tells you which service is due.
The oil change covers the engine oil and filter. The inspection is the wider look at the rest of the car. On many visits the two fall due together, and that's when you see the combined message.
The counters can also drift apart. If a past visit reset only the oil change reminder, the inspection reminder keeps counting on its own schedule. That's how some owners see Inspection due a few months after an oil change. Bring your last invoice so the shop can see what was actually done and avoid repeating work.
How often does an Audi need an inspection?
For U.S. cars, Audi of America recommends a maintenance service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever occurs first, according to its Audi Care brochure. Use whichever limit comes first, not whichever is more convenient.
The time limit is the one low-mileage owners miss. If you drive an Audi around Hermosa Beach and put on 5,000 miles a year, the 12-month clock will still bring the reminder up. Rubber, fluids, and brake components age whether the car moves or not.
Audi also notes that actual scheduled services vary by model, model year, and mileage. Your Warranty and Maintenance Booklet or owner's manual is the final word for your specific car.
What gets checked during an Audi inspection service?
The inspection is a scheduled walk through the car's wear items and safety systems. Audi's Audi Care brochure lists the items covered across its scheduled maintenance, and these are the ones that show up most often:
- Brake system inspection, including pad wear and fluid level
- Tires and spare inspected for wear and damage, with pressure adjusted
- Underbody checked for damage and leaks, including wheel liners and lines
- Engine compartment inspected for leaks
- Exterior and interior lights checked for proper operation
- Battery tested and replaced if necessary
- A road test
- The service reminder display reset
Some items run on their own timers. Audi lists brake fluid replacement every two years regardless of mileage, and the dust and pollen filter every 20,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first. Those land on specific visits, not every one.
Can you ignore an Audi inspection reminder for a while?
You can drive the car, but putting the service off for months is a poor trade. The reminder exists because the checks catch small leaks, worn pads, and aging fluids before they turn into bigger repairs. Plan the visit within a few weeks of the message appearing.
There's also a records reason. If your Audi is still under warranty, a clean, on-time service history helps support a future claim. The Federal Trade Commission's consumer guidance on auto warranties tells owners to keep records of maintenance like oil changes, new brake pads, and inspections, no matter who does the work.
Who can reset the Inspection due message?
The shop that performs the service should reset it, and doing that needs a diagnostic tool that talks to Audi's systems. Audi lists the service reminder display reset as part of its scheduled maintenance. Ask whoever does the work to confirm the reminder is reset before you leave.
You don't have to go to the dealer for this. The FTC's guidance says you don't have to use the dealer for maintenance to keep your warranty in effect, and the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act bars a warrantor from tying coverage to a brand-name service it doesn't provide free. At our shop we service Audi models with dealer-level diagnostic tools, so the reset happens as part of the visit.
What should you do when the message appears?
Note whether it says inspection, oil change, or both, and check your mileage against the last service. Then book the visit within the next few weeks. If you want a sense of what it will run before you call, our guide to Audi maintenance cost lays out the numbers.
If you're in Hermosa Beach or elsewhere in the South Bay, we can handle the inspection, show you photos of anything we find, and get your approval before any extra work. Concierge pickup and drop-off is available if you'd rather not bring it in yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Inspection due the same as an oil change on an Audi?
No. Audi tracks the oil change and the inspection separately, and the car can show Oil change due, Inspection due, or both together. The inspection is the broader check of brakes, tires, fluids, lights, the underbody, and the other scheduled items, while the oil change is just engine oil and filter. Many visits combine the two.
Can I keep driving my Audi when it says Inspection due?
Yes. It is a maintenance reminder, not a fault warning, and the car is not telling you something has broken. It does mean a scheduled service is due, so plan it in the next few weeks rather than putting it off for months. A red warning light or a check engine light is a different matter and needs attention sooner.
Does servicing my Audi at an independent shop void the warranty?
No. The Federal Trade Commission's guidance says you don't have to use the dealer for repairs or maintenance to keep your warranty in effect. Keep every service record and receipt so you can show the maintenance was done on time.
How much does an Audi inspection service cost?
It depends on the model, the mileage, and which scheduled items fall due at that visit. We break down real numbers in our guide to Audi maintenance cost, and we quote your specific car before any work starts.
