Dealer-Level Tools Without the Dealer Games

We invested in the same diagnostic equipment authorized dealerships use because we refuse to guess. This means we can diagnose issues that other independent shops send customers back to the dealership for, and we do it without the upselling, the inflated pricing, or treating you like a number in a queue. You get accurate diagnosis and honest recommendations.

Returning customer. I described the issue with my vehicle and Elmer diagnosed it on the spot, misfiring. Of course they hooked up the computer.

Porsche quoted me $5,000 for a brake job. I called Shawn, and over the phone, he gave me a price that was a fraction of that. Quality work, fair price, no games.

After taking it to multiple mechanics in the area with no one able to figure out the issue, I finally brought it to Shawn. He got back to me the same day with a solution.

Auto Repair Glossary

The vocabulary behind expert European auto repair

Eleven concepts that show up most often when we talk about diagnosing and fixing a BMW, Porsche, Audi, or Mercedes-Benz. Each one is linked to its canonical Wikipedia article and Wikidata entity, so you (and the rest of the web) can verify what we mean.

Auto repair shop

An independent business that diagnoses and repairs cars and light trucks. Independent shops differ from dealership service departments in pricing flexibility, parts sourcing, and the ability to specialize deeply in one or two manufacturers.

ASE certification

Credential issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence after an ASE-accredited written exam plus two years of verified work experience. Master Technician status requires passing all eight automobile service certification tests.

On-board diagnostics

The vehicle's self-diagnostic system, standardized as OBD-II on every U.S. car since 1996. A scan tool plugged into the diagnostic port pulls fault codes from the engine, transmission, ABS, airbag, and HVAC modules so a technician can isolate the actual cause behind a warning light.

Original equipment manufacturer

OEM refers to parts produced by or for the vehicle's original manufacturer to the same specification used on the assembly line. On German cars, OEM and quality aftermarket parts often outperform generic equivalents because the engineered tolerances are tighter.

Brake pad

The friction component pressed against the rotor when you brake. Pads on most German cars carry an electronic wear sensor that triggers a dash warning before the pad runs out, and front pads typically wear faster than rear because the front brakes do most of the stopping.

Disc brake

The standard brake design on modern cars: a caliper squeezes pads against a metal rotor to create the friction that stops the wheel. Worn pads or warped rotors are the most common cause of brake noise, vibration, and longer stopping distances.

Shock absorber

A hydraulic damper that controls how the suspension spring oscillates after the wheel hits a bump. Worn shocks cause a bouncy ride, longer stopping distances, and uneven tire wear; on cars with electronic suspension they also carry sensors that report ride-height data to the vehicle's control modules.

Antifreeze

The ethylene-glycol or propylene-glycol coolant circulated through the engine and radiator to absorb combustion heat and prevent freezing. German cars use specific coolant formulations (G11, G12, G13) and mixing types can damage the cooling system.

Motor oil

The lubricant that reduces friction inside the engine and carries combustion byproducts to the filter. German manufacturers specify exact oil grades (LL-01, 229.5, etc.); using a non-spec oil can void warranties and accelerate wear in turbocharged engines.

Automatic transmission

A gearbox that selects the correct gear ratio without driver input, using a torque converter or dual-clutch system. Modern German automatic transmissions integrate a hydraulic-electronic control unit (mechatronic) that needs periodic fluid service to stay reliable.

Spark plug

The component that ignites the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder of a gasoline engine. German cars typically use platinum or iridium plugs that last 60,000-100,000 miles; worn plugs cause misfires, rough idle, and a check-engine light.
